Just got myself an Ape 50 pick up (2007) thats been off the road for two years. I want to increase its speed so I can sit at 50 to 55mph reliably without screwing the guts out of the engine. The way I see it is I have two options... 1, get the biggest cyl kit I can find with a long stroke crankshaft, big carb, higher gearing, and performance exhaust. 2, buy a 200 to 300cc Vespa engine from a modernish scooter and make it fit onto the Ape diff (I want to keep the Ape running gear).
If I go for option 1 will it sit comfortably at 50/55? (Anyone know??) Has anyone ever fitted a bigger engine and retained the original Ape two wheel drive and diff? (Even if it is a lot of work).
I'm a mechanical engineer with 35 years hands on experience so not phased by either option but would like the opinions/advice of anyone who has gone down either of these routes.
Its a small forum I know but I'm hoping someone on here has tried one or both and can help me decide.
Thanks and regards, Eric.

you could get it to do 55mph but i would think you will have to use a top end kit like zirri or quattrini which i doubt will be reliable. i think a newer bigger engine would be better and more reliable.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've not had time to have a good look at the engine and diff (just picked it up tonight) but do you know if the engine unbolts leaving behind the diff and drive shafts so it is just a matter of figuring out how to couple a bigger engine to the diff and work out engine mounting?? Thanks and regards, Eric.

I've been studying the diff and I think your right about how its bolted on, suppose I better take the whole lot out. My thoughts are to try and mate the diff to a Vespa P200E engine (with electric start). But I'll need to do my homework on the gearing etc. I'll ask on another thread but I dont suppose you know where I can find the VIN number do you? How many numbers etc so I can figure out its the right number I'm looking at? I didn't get the docs and have to send for new ones (£25!!) and need the VIN number or DVLA will send the forms back to me. (and probably ask for another £25!) Thanks and regards, Eric.

The diff/reverse gearbox is not a great design and not sure how much abuse or high speed running they can take. The one side of the diff runs directly onto the aluminium casing. While the other side runs in a bush. I agree with the previous advice about reliability. If you start modifying these things then its not going to be cheap and not that reliable. Any modified small engine as to work very hard. These engines are based on a 50+ year old design.

You'll go deaf at 55mph!
